Introduction
Health Information Management Department is one of the major Departments in Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife. It is a professional department
The Department is functionally and directly responsible to Chairman Medical Advisory Committee of the Institution.
BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
When Ife University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex was taken over by the government in 1975, Mr. kanmi Adisa was appointed as the first Head of Department in 1976 and left in 1980.
Mr. D. O. Akanji was appointed as Head of Department and retired in 1995.
Other officers that retired as Heads of Department are as follow
1. Mr. Akin Ibimilua 1995 – 2012 2. Mr. S. O. Olatoki 2012 – October 2013 3. Mr. A. O. Ogunniran October 2013 – October 2014 4. Mr. Ayo Ijilegan October 2014 – December 2014 5. Mr. Michael Odelade December 2014 – October 2015 6. Mr. P. A. Omotoso October 2015 till date
STAFF STRENGHT
The Department currently has staff strength of eighty three (83) comprising of 24 professionals, fifty-five clerical staff and 4 secretarial Staff.
FUNCTIONS OF THE DEPARTMENT
1. To control and develop an efficient patient identification system. 2. To assemble and analyse the health records of all patients so that information is organized in such a way as to be available for patients care, medico-legal cases, research, statistical and educational purpose. 3. To maintain adequate numbering and filing system for quick and easy retrieval of records for patient care, research and teaching. 4. To collect and compile Hospital and Health Statistics for the evaluation of patient care, Administrative purposes, planning of Hospital and Health Care facilities and to perform demographical surveys relating to health care delivery. 5. To protect the patients rights of privacy by securing the information from unauthorized persons and to ensure that the full records is provided for court action on receipt of subpoena. 6. To classify disease operation and prepare related indexing for retrieval of Medical and Surgical information for research and teaching. 7. To impart students of Health Information Management with practical knowledge. 8. To establish patterns of communication within the Hospital or Healthcare Institutions for patients’ care and form a communication link between the institution and outside agencies. 9. To assist in developing computer service related to patient’s identification and clinical information system.

The structure of Health Information Management Department, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife can be considered in view of the mechanism of its service delivery. The Department extends its service delivery across the Hospital’s formation of O.A.U.T.H.C., Ile-Ife through its Units locations Viz:
