The Chief Medical Director is the Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer and in that capacity has responsibility for the day-to-day management of the entire hospital. He is directly responsible to the Board of Management usually instituted by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He is the Chief image maker and also the Chief Accounting Officer of the institution.
There are two broad Directorates under which various units and departments in the hospital are grouped for efficient and effective service delivery in Teaching Hospitals in Nigeria. In this wise, he is assisted in accordance with the reconstitution of Boards of University Teaching Hospital’s Decree 10 of 1985 by the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (Director of Clinical Services) who coordinates the medical and clinical activities including training, health care and research and the Director of Administration who is in charge of support services in the hospital.
The Chief Medical Director in addition directs the activities of key Departments like Accounts and Finance, Internal Audit, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Unit, SERVICOM Department, Procurement Unit, Legal Unit, as well as relationship with external bodies.
The statutory role of the Chief Medical Director is that of an over-all coordinator of the entire hospital. Each Director may be ascribed specific responsibility for a group of activities. The Chief Medical Director has global responsibility even for the functions assigned to the various directors.
