To provide first class mental health care and train high calibre mental health professionals entrusted with the dissemination of clinical knowledge as well as conduct high quality research to advance the frontiers of knowledge in mental health for the overall benefit of mankind.
To enable people participate in their own mental health care through the operation of primary mental health care as part of department health care system
BRIEF HISTORY AND OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Mental Health initially part of Department of Medicine but was formally established as a Department in 1983 with Prof O. Morakinyo as the Head of the Department. The focal points of the Department were to meet the manpower needs and provide knowledge-based solutions to the problems of the mental health sub-sector of our health care system as well as that of the society at large. The department has trained several residents and currently has 2 residents and 5 senior residents in 2 units. There are clinic days for the Ife unit on Wednesdays and Fridays while there 2 in the Ilesa unit on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Specific Objectives
The specific objectives of the Department include:
- To train/educate different cadres of young professionals for careers in mental health/psychiatry and to inculcate in them, life-long habits of discipline, leadership, innovation and service
- To conduct strategic research (biological, clinical and community) in mental health so meet the health need of the nation.
- To participate in community mental health promotion to secure improvement in physical, social, mental and spiritual well being of the people.

Adesanmi Akinsulore
Adesanmi Akinsulore He holds a Bachelors degree in Medicine and surgery (MBChB) and a Masters degree in Public Health (MPH) from the Obafemi
Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. Also, he obtained a fellowship in the Faculty of Psychiatry (FWACP) of the West African College
of Physicians and Faculty of Psychiatry (FMCPsych) of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. At Present, he is a
Lecturer at the Department of Mental Health, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. His research interest lies in Schizophrenia Disorder,
Forensic Psychiatry, Community Mental Health and General Adult Psychiatry. He is also a volunteer member and facilitator of Foundation
for the care and resettlement of the mentally ill (CAREMI). Mapayi Boladale Dr. Mapayi holds a Bachelors degree in Medicine and surgery and a masters degree in Clinical Psychology from the
Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. Also, she obtained a fellowship in Psychiatry from the West African College of Physicians. At present, she is a Consultant Psychiatrist at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife
and a Lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife. Her core research interest lies in gender based violence, women's mental health and Adolescent mental health, especially around issues
concerning sexuality and psychoactive substance use. She is a volunteer counselor for adolescents through the Women against Rape Sexual
Harassment and Exploitation (WARSHE) group, which is a civil society that helps abused girls and women in Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife.
She also offers information to the community through outreaches on the prevention of mental illnesses. She is a volunteer
member/counselor/facilitator for the Foundation for the care and resettlement of the mentally ill (CAREMI). Dr (Mrs) B.Y. Oladimeji Dr Oladinmeji is one of the first generation Nigerian Clinical Psychologist. She received a master’s degre. in psychology from
Moscow State University U.S.S.R. and a Ph.D in Psychological Medicine from the University of Wales, Cardiff, U.K. She is currently an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology in the Department of Mental Health, Obafemi Awolowo University
and a Consultant Clinical Psychologist at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife. She is a certified
psychotherapist with over three decades of clinical supervisory, consulting and teaching experience. She is the author of more than
twenty-five published journal articles and book chapters in psychology and health related fields. She has edited a Textbook on Behavioural
Sciences for Health Practitioners, apart from serving on editorial board of national and international professional journals. Her core
research interest lies in psychometric assessment, psychological treatments, health psychology, and child and adolescent psychology. Prof Femi Oluwasegun Fatoye He holds a Bachelors degree in Medicine from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. Also, he obtained a Fellowship in
Psychiatry from the National Postgraduate Medical of Nigeria. He is currently a Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Mental Health, Obafemi Awolowo University and a Consultant psychiatrist
at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife. At present, he is the secretary of the faculty of Psychiatry,
National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. His research interest focused majorly on the mental health issues of special and vulnerable groups (adolescents/young adults and women).
