OVERVIEW
The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the Obafemi Awolowo University
Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife offers quality anaesthetic and intensive care services to a
wide variety of patients. There are four Consultant Physician Anaesthetists working
with Resident doctors, nurse anaesthetists and Intensive Care nurses. The Department
provides care for over 5,000 patients each year. The Department has been in the
forefront of providing Anaesthesia for complex surgical cases since 2001. Our modest
achievements over the years include provision of anaesthesia and critical care for:
- Provision of Anaesthesia for Renal Transplantation since 2002.
- Provision of Anaesthesia for Paediatric patients.
- Provision of Anaesthesia for Cochlear Implant in Deaf patients
- Provision of Anaesthesia for Neurosurgery
- Dedicated Ambulatory Surgery Services

ANAESTHESIA CLINIC
Physician anaesthetists run an anaesthesia clinic daily between the hours of 8.00am and 4.00pm
at the main unit of the Hospital for both in and out patients. Appointments with Consultant
Anaesthetists are scheduled upon the request of other specialist doctors.
CLINICAL TRAINING
The Department is fully accredited for training in Anaesthesia. We provide training
for one (1) year Postgraduate Diploma in Anaesthesia and the 4 year Residency Training
programme for Fellowship qualification in Anaesthesia. Resident doctors in Surgery, Obstetrics
and gynaecology, and Dentistry in the Hospital and other institutions also come for Anaesthesia and
Intensive Care posting in the Department in preparation for the Part I examination
of the Postgraduate colleges.

Academic activities in the Department include:

- Intensive Tutorials for Residents preparing for Part l Examinations
- Monthly Journal Club meetings
- Quarterly morbidity/mortality review
- Intensive Care Seminars
CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION TRAINING AND WORKSHOPS
The Department organizes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) workshops for staff and
students of the hospital and other bodies with the aim of saving lives and improving quality of health care
services in our immediate environment and the nation at large.
RESEARCH
Physician Anaesthetists in the Department are actively involved in research work.
The department supports a wide range of clinical research projects with a view to improving
the quality of care of our patients. Funding is from both public and private sources.
