WELCOME TO DEPARTMENT OF ANAESTHESIA AND INTENSIVE CARE

INTRODUCTION


The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife offers quality anaesthetic and intensive care services to a wide variety of patients. There are Eight Consultant Physician Anaesthetists working with Resident Doctors, Nurse anaesthetists and Intensive Care nurses. The Department provides care for over 5,000 patients each year at both Ife Hospital Unit and Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa. The Department has been in the forefront of providing Anaesthesia for complex surgical cases since 2001. Our modest achievements over the years include provision of anaesthesia and critical care for:

  1. Renal Transplantation since 2002
  2. Paediatric patients.
  3. Cochlear Implant in Deaf patients*
  4. Neurosurgery
  5. Open Heart Surgery
  6. Total Hip Replacement
  7. Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreaticography (ERCP)
  8. Others are:
    • Dedicated Anaesthesia for Ambulatory Surgery
    • Epidural Labour Analgesia
    • Peripheral Nerve Blocks
    • Dedicated pain clinic

ANAETHESIA CLINIC

Physician anaesthetists run an anaesthesia clinic at the main unit of the Hospital and Wesley Guild Hospital unit for both in and out patients on appointments with Consultant Anaesthetists as scheduled upon the request of other specialist doctors.


CLINICAL TRAINING

The Department is fully accredited by National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria(NPMCN) and West African College of Surgeons (WACS) for training in Anaesthesia. We provide training for one (1) year Postgraduate Diploma in Anaesthesia and the 4 year Residency Training programme for Fellowship qualification in Anaesthesia. Resident doctors in Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dentistry and Internal Medicine in the Hospital and other institutions also come for Anaesthesia and Intensive Care posting in the Department in preparation for the Part I Examination of the Postgraduate colleges.

Academic activities in the Department include:

  1. Weekly Departmental Seminars
  2. Weekly Basic Sciences Lectures for Residents preparing for Part I Examinations
  3. Intensive Tutorials for Residents preparing for Part II Examinations
  4. Monthly Journal Club meetings
  5. Quarterly Audits, Morbidity/Mortality Reviews

CARDIOPULMONMARY RESUSCITATION TRAINING AND WORKSHOPS

The Department organizes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) workshops for staff and students of the hospital and other bodies with the aim of saving lives and improving quality of health care services in our immediate environment and the nation at large.


RESEARCH

Physician Anaesthesia in the Department are actively involved in research work. The department supports a wide range of clinical research projects with a view to improving the quality of care of our patients. Funding is from personal, public and private sources.
