The assertion that the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife is a leading centre of excellence in every clinical, training and support services is not in doubt. This assertion was again reaffirmed at the just concluded Florence Nightingale Trophy Speech Contest, where the OAUTHC Schools of Nursing contingent emerged victorious after a rigorous competition with other Schools across the country.
Olawatobi Adewunmi of the School of Nursing, Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa won the (2019) 49th edition of the Florence Nightingale Trophy Speech Contest held at the Lagos State School of Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health, Igando, which showcased forty-six (46) contestants under the Chairmanship of the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole.
This year’s triumph marks the 8th time OAUTHC has won the contest. The OAUTHC School of Nursing thus becomes the first Institution in the country to win it back to back and equally winning it for the third time in four years. It would be recalled that the OAUTHC representative, Miss Abimbola Adebayo won the 2018 edition of the contest, which held at the ECWA School of Nursing, Egbe, Kogi State.
Director of Nursing Education, Mrs. Olubunmi Lawal while presenting the participants (SON, IHU Ile-Ife – Adedayo Olagunju, and Oyindamola Oyadele; SON, WGL Ilesa – Oluwatobi Adewunmi and Oluwaseun Ojo) to the Management noted that the intelligent students triumphed through hard work, sacrifice and focus. She also acknowledged the contributions of the tutors and contest training team comprising of Mrs. O.A Akinwumiju, Mrs. G. Ibitoye, Mr. I. O. Fafiyebi and Mrs. A. O. Odukoya.
The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Victor Adebayo Adetiloye congratulated the tutors and students for the recent triumph, and expressed the Management’s delight and pride towards the success achieved. He further acknowledged the successes being accomplished by the Schools through outstanding results in their final exams. However, he reiterated the need of the institution to absorb her excellent students. This institution keeps producing the best in the country and we cannot afford to keep losing our best brains to neighboring institutions, it is important we retain our best students across all professions, he stated.
