PATIENTS PREPARATION
1. Proper patients’ preparation is highly essential for quality results, thus all concerned with laboratory requests should kindly adhere to adequate patients’ preparation
Such tests include the following: OGTT, 24hr urine collection, occult blood test, pregnancy test, fertility hormone profile, cortisol,
>br>Instructions for 24 hours urine collection.
The starting time of collection (not later than 7.00am) should be noted. The first morning urine should be discarded. All urine voided throughout the 24 hour period should be collected into the special container (keg) containing preservative (earlier added from the Laboratory). At the end of 24 hours period (e.g 7.00pm), the next urine sample voided should be added even if the patient does not feel the urge to urinate immediately. The accompanying blood sample should be collected not later than 1 hour prior to the end of the urine collection.
Instructions for fasting and two hours postprandial blood glucose collection.
A normal evening meal should be taken the night before the test is scheduled which should not be later than 8.00pm. After this no water or food should be taken until the end of the test the following morning. Fasting blood sample should be collected not later than 8.00 am on the day of the investigation and the sample should be clearly labelled 'FASTING' with time of collection written on the sample bottle. Then patient should eat his/her normal breakfast. The exact time of finishing the breakfast should be noted on a paper and patient should not eat or drink anything till the two hours postprandial sample is collected. The postprandial sample should be collected exactly 2hours after the breakfast and be labelled ‘POSTPRANDIAL’. The two samples should be brought to the laboratory immediately after collection. If urine sample is requested, it should be collected before the breakfast is taken.
Instructions for collection of stool for occult blood test.
The patient should avoid blood meal, blood containing meal, blood tonic, multivitamins supplements minimum of three days before stool sample collection. In addition, female patient should not be menstruating

SAMPLE COLLECTION
Proper sample collection is an integral pre-requisite to quality laboratory results.
Out-patients samples
Samples from out-patients will be collected between 8.00-1.00pm
In-patients samples
Samples from in-patients will be collected 24 hour round but requests that come in after 1.00pm (Monday-Friday) will be treated the following day except when such samples are for emergency requests.
Tests that need laboratory preparations
The laboratory should be pre-informed of any special request (e.g lithium) or when any special procedures involving laboratory collaboration are to be carried out e.g organ transplant.
Sample transportation to the Laboratory
The integrity of sample reaching the laboratory is essential for quality results. The following steps are to be adhered to for proper sample transportation.
Therefore, the laboratory will henceforth accept in-patients samples transported by only trained personnels.
